Together with the GALAB laboratories GmbH, we receive a research project grant from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the project proposal on "Entwicklung monolithischer Bioreaktoren zur kontinuierlichen Biokatalyse enantiomerenreiner Zielverbindungen in nicht-wässrigen Systemen für pharmazeutische Anwendungen"

The purpose of this project "EnantioKont" is to develop a technique which allows a cost-saving production of isomerically pure compounds (chiral amines, amides, alcohols and esters etc.) for the pharmaceutical industry with high space-time yields. Therefore (monolithic) polymer-based reactors have to be developed. Ionic liquids, wherein essential amounts of biocatalysts are dissolved have to be immobilized on these reactors. While flushing the bioreactors with substrate-containing organic solvents enantiomerically pure products can be synthesized. Continuous removing of the products simplifies complex separation and purification steps. To produce products with high space-time yields, the bioreactors have to be synthesized in volumes between 2.5 mL and 1 L. Using a biphasic system consisting of a catalyst-containing stationary phase and an organic mobile phase, products can be synthesized which could not enzymatically be realized to date because of instabilities of the catalyst, limited solubility of substrates and products or hydrolytic back reactions.
